Workshop Description

The 8th International Summer School for Neuropathology and Epilepsy Surgery will be designed to enable participants to better recognize and classify various histopathological substrates of pharmaco-resistant epilepsy. The workshop has been held in Germany, Brazil, USA and China since 2013, with continuous endorsement of the International League Against Epilepsy. Topics related to the diagnosis and treatment of human focal epilepsies will be presented by internationally renowned faculty. Advanced hands-on histopathology training will be offered in small groups led by distinguished tutors who will review and discuss microscopy slides of selected cases with different staining protocols. Participants will also have the opportunity to present their own cases for discussion with the entire group.

Learning Objectives

  1. Discuss diagnostic evaluation of surgical specimens, with particular emphasis on mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis, epilepsy-associated tumors, malformations of cortical development, focal cortical dysplasia, vascular malformations, and encephalitis.
  2. Disseminate new and upcoming clinico-pathologic classification systems among the neuro-/pathology communities and to validate existing and up-coming consensus classification systems by a larger cohort of practicing neuro-/pathologists.
  3. Recognize and classify various histopathological substrates of pharmaco-resistant epilepsy.

Target Audience

Neuro-/Pathologists, Epileptologists, Neurosurgeons & Neurologists, Neuroimager and Basic Researcher

More Information

Our summer school will be restricted to 26 attendees, which will be trained in small groups at the multihead microscope by expert tutors (see invitation flyer). A collaborative virtual microscopy platform will be also available for all participants to microscopically review our cases before, during and after the meeting. You will always have the opportunity to meet and discuss these cases with our tutors. In addition, there will be a morning lecture addressing broader topics for better understanding of a clinician’s perspective, in particular about the role of a detailed neuropathological diagnosis for directing clinical decision-making.

We are particularly keen to encourage participants from low- or middle income countries to attend our summer school. We can offer a limited number of travel bursaries from the Intl Society of Neuropathology. Decision for additional travel grants from ILAE is pending. However, you will need to fully register (including payment of registration fee) before applying for these bursaries, although you should already indicate if such support will be requested.

The registration fee for INES 2015 is 300,- Euro (equivalent to 1000,- Real). This fee will include the INES booklet, daily lunch and beverages as well as a welcome reception. All payment details will be forwarded to you after your application has been accepted.
