ERNs Care for Ukraine: ERNCARE4UA

The 24 European Reference Networks (ERNs) Stand United to Support Ukrainian Patients with Rare and Complex Diseases

The 24 European Reference Networks (ERNs) have joined forces to support Ukrainian patients during this time of crisis. In response to the ongoing war, all 24 ERNs have launched:

  • A dedicated website, erncare4ua.com: it provides detailed information about each ERN, as well as general updates and resources aimed at supporting Ukrainian patients with rare diseases.
  • A social media campaign using the hashtag #ERNcare4Ua: designed to assist healthcare professionals in identifying the right resources for diagnosis, treatment, and expert advice.

Given the current conflict, many Ukrainian citizens face limited access to healthcare or are forced to seek refuge in EU countries. Among them, a significant number will have health conditions, including rare or very rare diseases, which affect roughly 6% of the EU population. These conditions often require highly specialized expertise and treatment that may not be available in many regions.

The ERNs are prepared to assist Ukrainian patients through their extensive network of hospitals and academic centres. These specialized centres are particularly equipped to handle complex diagnostic procedures and provide appropriate treatments for rare diseases.

In addition to launching the hub and campaign, the Coordinators of all 24 ERNs have issued a joint statement affirming their commitment to support individuals with rare and complex conditions affected by the war in Ukraine.

We are here to help.
